Compliance Monitoring & Sampling

Accreditation:

Date & Time:

The Compliance Monitoring & Sampling training will be held on the following date and time:

April 23 8:30AM-3:30PM

This training is being held in the Pacific Time Zone.

Description:

In order to assure the safety of the water delivered to their customers, all water systems must sample the quality of the water supplied. Because the exact number and frequency of water quality samples required for each system is unique, it’s impossible to have a one-size-fits-all sampling plan. Each system must develop and follow its own distinctive plan.

Water quality sampling is:

·        Complex – there are over 100 different compounds and parameters that must be sampled;

·        Time sensitive – typically sampling must take place within exact schedules;

·        System specific – the number and type of samples required is dependent on the systems size, complexity, population served, source water type, and number of water sources.

All these factors lead to uncertainty, confusion, and ultimately, errors in sampling and reporting. In 2022 DDW reported 1796 monitoring and reporting violations. This means that there was a monitoring or reporting violation for one in four of California’s 7439 public water systems. Clearly there is a need for training in sampling and reporting procedures and techniques.

Public water systems are required to test for a multitude of constituents, both in their water sources and in the distribution system. Come find out how to develop your monitoring schedule, sample for each contaminant type, and manage your lab results. This training will help you to comply with the requirements of the Domestic Water Quality and Monitoring Regulations (California Code of Regulations Title 22, Division 4, Chapter 15).

Participants will learn how to:

·        Identify the two primary functions of water quality sampling in water system operation

·        Describe the consequences of not sampling in compliance with the regulations

·        Identify system type, system size/complexity, population served, source type, and number of water sources as the parameters that determine required water quality sampling for each public water system

·        Describe the types of contaminant standards (MCLs, SMCLs, NLs, MRDLs and TTs)

·        Explain the Monitoring Framework and how a water system can use it to determine a water system's monitoring requirements

·        Determine that the Chief Operator is responsible for the water system's monitoring and reporting

·        Use SDWIS to look up their water system's monitoring schedule

·        Correctly fill out a chain-of-custody form

·        Use the SDWIS database to lookup their water systems water quality data

The recommended audience includes operators, managers, and board members.
